My Off Season Fitness Plan

When I began this journey it was to become healthier through the fitness aspect of kayaking while also enjoying the outdoors. This is very hard to do in winter months when the water is unsafe due to the cold temperatures and possibly ice being present.

My answer to this is….JOIN A GYM.

I am a member of Planet Fitness off Kansas by Kearney. I try to go almost every day at 4:30ish in the morning. I do between 30-45 minutes of cardio on the bike or treadmill and keep my heart rate above 115. I know all you gym gurus are thinking it should be higher but unless you are over 300 pounds your opinion is just that. When being obese is most dangerous is when you push the envelope to try and not be obese overnight. This is where a lot of overweight people end up in the hospital for heart issues (If they are lucky). Our hearts aren’t tempered like a normal athlete so we must make it stronger before pushing it higher. Along side that as far as calorie burning due to our size and the effort it takes to move it in comparison with someone say half the body weight it takes 4 times more energy to move us.

Planet Fitness is a great gym that has all the equipment you need to get back in shape and prepare for the months when you can go out for an 8 mile row. They practice a no tolerance for shaming and welcome everyone. They are open 24×7 as well so when you get the itch to start the burn their staff will always be there to welcome you in to a safe environment for you to be successful.

Along with the obvious benefit of continuing to lose weight from a workout it has an even higher purpose in my life. You see I am a Type 2 Diabetic. I am on 1200mg of Metformin per day and I HATEĀ taking pills. When I hit the gym I can drop my sugar levels by 10 points right away and even further if I am fasting before the workout for a few hours. I can even expand the time my sugar levels continue to fall by extending my fast for 2 to 3 hours past my workout and lock in to normal blood sugar ranges.

My biggest factor to staying fit though is my accountability partners. I have 2 friends who also work out every morning and we take pictures while we work out to show each other we are there and staying active.

Ending this article with a final thought for you to consider…I do not do this for me alone. I do this for those I love who depend on me and want to see me succeed.

Elephant In The Room In today's society excuses breed faster than rabbits so let's deal with that right off. Excuses are used to keep you from doing the things you don't want to do with a "reasonable" purpose. The reason we do this is simple. We don't want to do it....
